The critic for the
Atlanta Constitution headlined her review with the word "Magical."
"Magic," in a sense, is part of the plot which concerns a boy who finds his self-confidence, at first through what he believes are magical sneakers and then, finally, through himself.
Young Ed feels he's lost everything when his family moves to a new city -- his friends, Little League status, everything! Ed's despair is broken when his parents buy him new sneakers that he thinks are magical.
When the sneakers are stolen, he finds he has to make it on his own -- and he does! The music is contemporary; much of it is soft rock. The theme is that we don't need magic to find confidence because we can find it in ourselves.
