Mary Lennox, the spoiled child of uncaring parents now dead in India, is sent to Yorkshire to live with her uncle and guardian in a mansion on the moor. There she hears mysterious crying down the halls and knows that the housekeeper and the doctor are plotting something evil.

Through the sympathy of a young housemaid, Martha, and her brother, Dickon, Mary comes to know what love means. Together, they solve the mystery of the crying sounds from the hall. In the secret garden, she and her friends experience the restorative powers of creativity and self-realization.
