At a New York girl's boarding house, there is a newspaper woman who wants to write a novel, a wise cracking shop girl, the serious music student, a faded actress, a girl looking for romance, the kid who wants to crash Broadway and other boarders.

The landlady, is the proud custodian of the "McCarthy Collection," a group of perfect uncut diamonds. When it disappears from the safe, the newspaper woman is given two hours to solve the case before the police are called. Suspicion is cleverly shifted from one to the other of the girls and there's a very surprising solution.

  • ARLENE DAY - a sale girl, 21, very quick on the trigger, has a shrewd sense of humor with a dry, humorous way of speaking. In dress and appearance, looks like your typical shop girl.

  • SELENA BARNES - a waitress, 21, small and plump in appearance, not unattractive and speaks in a high, squeaky voice with a lisp. Should be a good foil for Arlene.

  • GRAYCE JOHNSTON - a music student, in her early 20s. Tall and thin, severe in speech and appearance, and wears conservative clothes.

  • ROSIE - a maid, either young or middle-aged. Teutonic type, stout, tidy in appearance, her cheeks are usually flushed, very slow-witted.

  • HANNAH WILLIAMS - a romantic young lady, 20. Tall and willowy, and wears attractive clothes. Her manner should be exuberant and breathless. She never walks, but flutters; never talks, but gushes.

  • PHYLLIS DEERING - a newspaper woman, 23, has a nice appearance. Rather quiet to charm, good sense of humor and intelligent manner.

  • CLAUDIE VANDERMEER - a home girl, 22. Tall, blonde, nicely-built and attractive in a rather obvious way. Slinky and languorous in her manner, and always posing.

  • MRS. McCARTHY - a landlady, 45. Stout and buxom, but the live-wire type. Not overly intelligent, with penchant for talking a great deal.

  • LULU ANN SMITH - a girl from the South, 18. Small, dark, wispy and very charming. Has a winsome smile, a ready laugh and speaks with a pleasing Southern accent.

  • MISS VERNE - a woman of mystery, 25. Wears conservative business clothes, and is a little mannish in appearance. Her manner is secretive and she gives the impression of being well able to take care of herself.

  • RAY CARTWRIGHT - an actress, about 40. Was probably a beauty in her day, but now her charm is rather faded, her clothes shabby. In voice and manner she is a cultivated, intelligent person.
