REVIEWS:

"Endearing... a reminder of Twain's storytelling genius and how much fun it can be... flavorful as apple cider, pungent, ironic."

The Los Angeles Times

"Sharp and resourceful... played with freshness and theatricality... charming."

Variety

"This utterly engaging work seduces the audience with an ease that would make the sly satanic snake supremely jealous."

Santa Barbara News Press

"Mark Twain isn't just for Hal Holbrook anymore. David Birney brings Mark Twain's words to life... in a romantic adventure for the ages."

Times Union, Albany, New York

Premiere Production:

First produced for PBS "American Playhouse," The Diaries... is a uniquely American theatre piece. Since that time, the show has enjoyed well over 200 productions, in both extended runs and touring engagements at regional theatres, college and university theatres, and performing arts centers on both coasts and across the country.

  • Casting: 1M, 1F
  • Casting Notes: Adam and Eve must move from youth to maturity playing out the life of the couple together until the death of Eve. Some "aging" is required: it needn't be extreme but some indication of change, of age is necessary. There are two baby baskets that hold the mimed "babies," Cain and Able.
