Welcome to the small Eastern European country of Moldova. Despite being one of the smallest (and poorest) former Soviet states, this proud nation has defied the Global Financial Crisis, the iron fist of its former sovereign country and indeed all common sense by staging this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

This evening's show is hosted by the glamorous but fearsome former KGB agent turned lifetstyle presenter Nastya Kokov and the frothy pop star Nikolae Nikovsky (winner of Moldova's Got Talent three year's running). Together they steer you through the political and musical minefield that is this year's competition which features your favourite European nations such as the United Kingdom, Sweden and Ireland as well as unexpected finalists Morocco and the eagerly anticipated first ever entry from the Vatican City.

Watch and wonder as ten nations fight it out for the ultimate prize and marvel at the entertainment spectacular that the host nation has created for your entertainment. Who wins? Well, you decide as with every performance it is the votes of the live audience that determines who walks away showered in glitter and glory.

Eurobeat: Moldova features an exciting selection of wonderful new songs, hilarious show stopping production numbers and the same excitement and irresistible fin that characterised the original Eurobeat - the world's first interactive musical.

  • KATYA KOKOV - Our hostess for Eurobeat – Moldova is a glamorous and larger than life personality. Severe and commanding, her past life as a KGB agent always threatens to bubble to the surface. Her struggle not to make the show entirely about her is real and she is prone to reminiscences about the past. She is singularly unimpressed with having to share the stage with her co-host but does soften towards him in the end.
  • NIKO NIKOVSKY - the boyish, bouncy and ever so slightly clueless cohost of Eurobeat - Moldova sees the event as an opportunity to promote his aspirations of pop stardom. He is overenthusiastic and although intimidated by his cohost continues to seek her approval. The fact he is gay he thinks is a well disguised secret – it’s not…
  • THE ENTRIES
SWEDEN - Astrid was inspired by Loreen, Sweden’s winning Eurovision artist from 2012 and 2023. She is overly earnest and immersed in her artistry. In keeping with the nautical theme of the song Semaphore of Love she is supported by handsome male backing dancers dressed like Gautier sailors who whip out semaphore flags towards the end of the song.
IRELAND - The number harks back to the Eurovision entries in the early 20 teens by the Irish identical twins Jedward who were utterly annoying and hyperactive. Their penchant for strange, futuristic outfits could be a feature of this number.
MOROCCO - Eurovision has a history of featuring unlikely entries. To date Morocco has only participated once in the actual competition. In this number the audience also witnesses the peculiar habit of cultural appropriation as we have seen everything from American country numbers to Alpine yodelling from non-alpine countries. It is a full Bollywood production number.
SPAIN - The Spanish entry references two of Spain’s most successful music exports the father and son Julio and Enrique Iglesais by bringing a father a son together as a duet although musically their styles don’t exactly match with father Rudolfo being a crooner and son Reynaldo being a hip hop artist. During they number they each try and win the heart of a lovely senorita, ultimately (and somewhat inappropriately) joining together in their efforts to seduce the fair maiden.
UNITED KINGDOM - Because Ireland has made an industry out of commercialising traditional Irish dancing through Riverdance, the time has come for the United Kingdom to attempt something similar by bringing Morris Dancing to the stage for its entry. Beginning with the cheerful and upbeat family group singing about togetherness, the number All Join Hands launches unexpectedly into a full Morris Dancing section before bringing the number to a close with a rousing anthem calling for peace and unity.
ITALY - Beginning with a classical aria, this entry confuses and delights the audience by jumping whole heartedly into a twist number inspired by the Italian classic Tintarella De Luna before adding to the confusion by the arrival of a pair of hip hop artists who try to seduce the performer Vesuvia Versace. She isn’t interested in small talk as she continually instructs them to not say ‘I love you’ but just say ‘Come here’.
POLAND - There always has to be a heartfelt ballad in the competition and in this show the honour belongs to the Minister for the Arts from Poland who delivers a crushingly depressing number about a heartbreak that goes from bad to worse to hilarious effect as he strives to make each verse more devastating than the previous one.
VATICAN CITY - I thought it was well past time that the competition had an entry from the Vatican City. Mother Morag and her sisters arrive with a boppy Motown style number which is added to by the arrival of a group of priests to bring things to a more appropriately religious choral moment before the sisters burst forth to bring the number home. The gag the entire number was conceived for references the Eurovision zeal for ‘the reveal’ where performers fling off one outfit to reveal something entirely different underneath, although on the song cue ‘Can’t conceal it. Time to reveal it’ the priests assist in removing the nuns’ habits to reveal exactly the same outfit underneath.
NORWAY - This epic entry begins with a meek accountant who invokes the spirit of his Viking forbears and eventually transforms to join them, accompanied by a Wagnerian soprano because why not?
NETHERLANDS - This rock and roll style entry refers to the old folk tale of the boy who saved Holland by sticking his finger into a leak he saw in a dyke that was protecting the city from the ocean beyond. In its ‘political narrative’, one of the two pop idols from the Netherlands who begins by enacting the traditional boy with his finger in the dyke story is encouraged by the other to pull his finger out and let the seas of change wash over everyone. During it we see the boy transform from his traditional garb to a rock and roll dude, bringing to mind the finale of Grease where Sandy turns from good girl to vamp.
