John Jakes has faithfully adapted Moliere's classic farce about the woodcutter, Snagarelle, whose angry wife identifies him to others as a celebrated doctor. Knocked about with sticks and blows, he becomes a doctor in spite of himself.
With mumbo-jumbo and plenty of nerve, he treats a rich man's daughter pretending to have lost her voice in order to block an arranged marriage. In the hilarious conclusion, the heroine is reunited with her true love and the doctor is rescued from the headsman, only to decide that he likes his new-found status.
Easy to produce, Doctor, Doctor! is a delicious blend of laughter and song with tuneful musical numbers that don't require highly accomplished singers.
