Jane Talbot has been sent to explain that the old farmhouse where the Russian couple have been allowed to live, almost in poverty, has been sold. Vladimir refuses to leave behind that part of his life which remains hidden behind the old piece of fabric that hangs on the wall. Nina is forced into revealing the deception that has governed their lives and, in so doing, discovers that there is no escape from the illusions we create for ourselves.
