The time, the future, after the great light when the old world was lost in one searing moment. The place, the Barrier, where the great letter D stands dividing two groups.

The man's group is militant. Its costumes suggest soldiers and it believes the D stands for defense. The woman's group is beautiful. Its pastel gowns suggest peace and parties and they believe the D denotes devotion.

Neither group realizes its need of the other but a boy and a girl are attracted to each other. The girl tells the boy of her love of flowers and gives him a little packet of seeds. She tells him, "You have the seeds and someday you will plant them. Remember!" And he replies, "I will remember."
