The Reardons are a typical American family whose eccentricities, if hilarious, are only normal. Laura, the mother, is a social climber. The youngest, Penelope, is a demon with a slingshot and the piano. Harry, the son, is positive he is the second coming of Shakespeare. Reginald, the father, would rather tinker with the automobile than ticker tape; and Nana, the wisecracking grandmother, is only concerned with Bing Crosby records.

LAURA REARDON - the mother of the family, is pretty, young and is fundamentally sound in spite of her often scatterbrained responses.
MRS. PARKER (BESSIE) - is a tall, aristocratic woman in her late forties. She gives the impression of looking down on everybody and everything.
NANA REARDON - is an active, vigorous, shrewd lady of sixty-odd years. She has a quick and sharp wit and the habit of saying what she thinks. People call her crotchety until they get to know the generous soul beneath her gruff exterior.
ESSIE - the maid of all work, is tall, woebegone, always expects the worst.
REGINALD REARDON - the man of the house, is pleasant, easy-going and in his late forties.
MARCIA REARDON - is sweet, pretty and twenty.
WARRY - is seventeen. He would be good-looking id he were better groomed.
MR. PARKER (JAMES) - is big and blustering and fifty.
SHERWIN PARKER - is twenty-five and good-looking in a plain way.
LILY REARDON - is a pretty, vibrant girl of seventeen or eighteen.
