A mother, Mrs. Yorke, and her daughter, Lily, are in disagreement about how Lily spends her time. Her mother tells her that she smokes and reads too much, while Lily believes her mother only wants her to get married and become a part of high society. Once her mother leaves, we see it's more than smoking that Lily has a problem keeping control of.
