Stage Adaptations for Jane Austen fans

by Jane Austen By Andrew Davies
Full Length Play, Adaptations (Literature), Comedy, 18th Century
Cast: 7M, 13F
Adapted from Andrew Davies' hit 1995 BBC TV series, this delightful comedy of manners revolves around the tumultuous relationship between Elizabeth Bennet, the lively and mischievous daughter of a gentleman from the country, and Darcy, a wealthy and proud lord.
The story is set in Georgian England when it was customary for only male heirs to inherit the estate. Mr and Mrs Bennet live in some comfort, but as they have five daughters and no son, it is imperative that the girls marry well.

Northanger Abbey (stage version)
by Jane Austen adapted by Tim Luscombe
Full Length Play, Drama, 19th Century
Cast: 4M, 4F
A delightful stage version of Jane Austen's earliest novel, her mock-Gothic Romance. Catherine Morland is taken by her aunt to Bath, where she encounters the social whirl denied her at home. She befriends Isabella Thorpe and her boorish brother John. She meets the charming but eccentric Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor. And all the time her head is full of the gothic fantasies of Mrs Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho, scenes from which will keep intruding into the daily life of Bath society.
When Catherine accepts an invitation to the Tilney's country seat at Northanger Abbey, lurid images of Udolpho threaten to overwhelm her. Until, as in all the best Jane Austen, Catherine finally gets her man...

Sense and Sensibility
by Jane Austen, adapted by Jon Jory
Full Length Play, Romance, 18th Century
Csat: 8M, 8F
Sisters Elinor and Marianne find themselves captivated by two very different men in this lively and dynamic adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel.
Sensible Elinor is charmed by the quiet, bumbling goodness of Edward, while passionate Marianne is swept off of her feet by the dashing and mysterious Willoughby. But when Willoughby's scandalous past and Edward's secret fiancee come to light, the sisters are forced to rely upon themselves and one another to weather their heartache -- and learn that when sense and sensibility meet, love can't be far behind.

Persuasion
by Jane Austen adapted by Jeff James with James Yeatman
Full Length Play, Drama, Adaptations (Literature)
Cast: 4M, 5F
If you can't find a husband in Bath, you won't find one anywhere.
When Captain Wentworth proposed to Anne eight years ago, he had only love and ambition to offer. Talked out of accepting his proposal by her family, Anne's never quite got over her first love.
But now Wentworth is back. Rich, successful and single, the handsome Captain has been transformed into a serious catch. When circumstances bring the two face to face again, Anne Elliot is forced to confront the past. As old wounds reopen, will Wentworth's resentment keep him away, and will Anne finally decide what she really wants?

Emma (stage version)
by Jane Austen adapted by Doon MacKichan and Martin Millar
Full Length Play, Drama
Cast: 2M, 6F
A bold, witty and fresh adaptation of Jane Austen's novel which, while thoroughly modern, retains the spirit and much of the language of the original.
It is night-time and an exhausted Jane Austen sleeps over the recently completed manuscript of her novel Emma. Her four nieces steal in and decide to act out the text and, after her initial anger on being wakened, Jane herself takes the role of Mr Knightley. The excitable teenage girls often try to take the story into their own realms of fantasy but are always brought back to the real text by Jane.

Mansfield Park (Hall)
by Jane Austen adapted by Willis Hall
Full Length Play, Drama
Cast: 11M, 9F
This skillful dramatization incorporates the tantalizing plot and rich characterizations that made the novel a classic.
As a timid nine-year old, Fanny Price is taken to live with her affluent cousins, the Bertrams, at Mansfield Park. Despite suffering many hardships as the poor relations, gentle and good natured Fanny becomes an indispensable member of the household and marries her true love Edmund.

The Watsons
Laura Wade
Full Length Play, Drama, Comedy
Cast: 10M, 9F
Emma Watson is nineteen and new in town. She's been cut off by her rich aunt and dumped back in the family home. Emma and her sisters must marry, fast.
If not, they face poverty, spinsterhood, or worse: an eternity with their boorish brother and his awful wife. Luckily there are plenty of potential suitors to dance with, from flirtatious Tom Musgrave to castle-owning Lord Osbourne, who's as awkward as he is rich. So far so familiar.
But there's a problem: Jane Austen didn't finish the story. Who will write Emma's happy ending now? Based on her incomplete novel, this sparklingly witty play looks under the bonnet of Jane Austen and asks: what can characters do when their author abandons them?
