When Louise's stodgy husband finds them kissing, she must ask her new lover his name in order to introduce him to her socially impeccable husband. After a night of discussion, frequently interrupted by sandwiches and drinks, Louise wins her freedom but finds, in the light of dawn, that she doesn't want it.

We Were Dancing was first produced as one of a series of nine one-act plays under the title Tonight At 8:30 at the Phoenix Theatre in January 1936, under the direction of Noël Coward.
