Taking place in the white heat of Tangiers, this richly textured play deals with a man's desperate attempt to save his wife from death. In order to free his wife from cancer, the frantic husband seeks out a strange singer, a Dr. Westermann, who may or may not possess diabolic healing powers. The doctor is not at all pleased to have his privacy invaded by a stranger making impossible demands. The doctor tells the man, I have been a student of cancer for years. The cells multiply and are beautiful in their multiplication. But there is no hope in them. Live without hope. But the man argues, I have found the one person in the world who can save her. Once a year you stand upon your balcony to sing of the hopelessness and the futility of living, but every year you continue to sing.
